Chambolle-Musigny

Chambolle-Musigny

Even the name has a musical ring to it.  This is one of the most gorgeous appellations of the Côte d’Or in Burgundy; within its confines are some beautiful Grand Cru vineyards and the pretty village of Chambolle sits in the middle of its top crus (there are 2 Grand Cru climats, Bonnes-Mares and Musigny here as well as 24 Premier Grand Cru climats).  The appellation covers over 152 hectares of vines, of which 55 hectares are Premier Cru. It produces red wines from the Pinot Noir grape.

The vineyards faces east at altitudes of 250-300 metres.  There is a small amount of clay topsoil over the hard Jurassic limestone.  At the bottom of the slopes there are more rocks and gravels in the soil.   The wines of Chambolle are considered the most “feminine” of the Côte de Nuits; they have intensity balanced by delicacy and an abiding elegance.   Their characteristic aromas are violets and small red fruits (raspberry, strawberry).  Secondary aromas include spice, truffles, licorice and cinnamon.  What also distinguishes Chambolle is its freshness and fragrance and its suave, round texture with very smooth tannins.

Chambolle wines pair well with roast chicken and veal as well as aromatic cheeses.  The wines can be enjoyed young or for a decade.
