The sun is shining and the days are long so it’s safe to say that barbecue season is upon us. We can finally get back to the simple pleasure of gathering together outside after a long, hot, workweek to unwind. What better way to do so, than settling in for a glass of wine as the BBQ heats up. While you are dreaming about the weekend, you better start thinking about what you are going to pour into your glass.

This summer, when you take your smoky, barbecue favorites off the grill, spice things up with a new wine pairing and surprise your guests. Off course, your perfect wine match will depend on the cut and seasoning but let's go back to the basics and enjoy the pure flavors from you favourite type of grilled meat paired with a great wine. From Burgers to lamb chops we bring you the best wine matches for your favourite BBQ dish.

Burgers

There’s nothing quite like the classic burger, grilled to perfection and full of beefy flavor. You have a lot of wine pairing options here. Tempranillo and Garnacha are wonderful partners, playing up the flavours for a variety of burgers. The aromas and flavours accent the savoury burgers without overpowering the flavours with too much oak or tannin.

    No Stone Unturned
Old Vine Garnacha/Carinena Terra Alta D.O.
    0.75l Red
    €14.90 €12.31
English Master of Wine Ed Adams and South African winemaker Bruce Jack share a love of Spain and make modern, pure wines respecting the indigenous grape varieties. Made from a blend of 60% Garnacha, 25% Carinena and 15% mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, this wine comes a stone-covered 26 hectare vineyard in Terra Alta in Catalonia. The Garnacha vines are nearly 50 years old and this age gives the wine great concentration and intensity with dark, spicy, blackberry fruit that has been seasoned and enhanced by 10 months new French oak barrels. No Stone Unturned is a big, rich wine that is ripe and juicy enough to be enjoyed now but will also last a good 8-10 years in bottle. Serve with cheeses, game and roast meats.

    The Charge
    Tempranillo/Garnacha Rioja D.O.C.
    0.75l Red
    €8.75 €7.23
Our brief for Ed Adams MW was to find us a modern style Rioja with not too much barrel aging so that we could enjoy the bright, fresh cherry fruit flavours of the Tempranillo grape. Working with Bodegas Manzanos in Rioja Baja, he has made a wine with excellent red berry and spicy fruit with refreshing acidity balanced by fine vanilla flavours from aging in a mix of American and French oak. The Charge red is made from 70% Tempranillo & 30% Garnacha grapes, harvested mid September 2016. Ed has increased the percentage of Garnacha with this producer since it is so good! The 2016 is bright and juicy with good generous fruit flavours and an attractive, warm, rich flavour of oak. Drink young alongside roast lamb and stews.

Sausages

Sausages right off the BBQ are terrific with rich, fresh, flavorful white wines. A German Riesling like our Deep Roots works almost everytime with nearly all types of sausage. Then again, if you prefer red wine, we can suggest sticking with light reds with enough freshness and soft tannins like our Marigny-Neuf Pinot Noir.

Thanks to the warm 2017 vintage, this wine has a full expression of Riesling with lovely fresh aromas of citrus fruit, blossom and pears. Created by three young, talented winemakers in the Rheinhessen, including our friend Jochen Dreissigacker, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures for three weeks and then aged for several months before bottling. Pure and fine on the palate, the 2017 has ripe fruit and great acidity that gives the wine good balance and structure. A very versatile wine which goes with light goods, salads and seafoods; a great favourite of ours also as an aperitif.

Frédéric Brochet loves Pinot Noir. This talented winemaker learned to make pure, fruit driven wines in Australia. He has planted the grape right in front of his headquarters at the Manoir de Lavauguyot looking south towards Futoroscope and the hills of Poitiers. This wine is organic, lively and pure with notes of kirsch, walnut and sweet spice on the nose. The taste is smooth and fruity with smoky notes and a lovely crunchy, acidity. Macerated on the skins with gentle pigeage to produce the ruby red colour and aged in French oak barrels for six months, its freshness and silky tannins make this a good match for poultry, salads, Porc filet mignon and all sorts of cheeses. Serve slightly chilled.

Lamb

When looking for a wine to serve with some lamb chops, you must make sure that it can stand up to the crispy char on the outside but it shouldn't overwhelm the decilate, tender meat of the chops. A medium bodied red that is fruit forward and not too acidic of spicy will achieve this balance and bring out the best.

    Médoc
    Cru Bourgeois 0.75l Red
    €12.20 €10.08
We are big fans of this Médoc which is classic in style and very aromatic. It is made in Bégadan, close to the Gironde estuary, by our young friends Frédéric Le Clerc and Benjamin Richer de Forges. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot, it has a deep ruby colour, a beautiful aromatic complexity of dark cherries, plums and a mineral nose. On the palate this is a soft, pretty inviting wine with a spicy, quite tannic finish. The wine is ready for drinking now and over the next five years and goes well with roasted meats and barbecues.

Steak

Nothing beats a great piece of steak that has been kissed by the flames of your BBQ. Whether you’re grilling or smoking beef, its savory flavors combined with its generous fat content make for a perfect pairing with BIG red wines. Don’t be afraid to serve wines that have seen some  oak—the smoky-sweet flavors of the barrels work well with the char on the meat. Go for our Cassagnes de la Nerthe, which is perfectly balanced between richness and freshness and full of spicy Rhône flavours. Another great match is our Domaine Georges Vernay's Fleurs de Mai with notes of plums, figs and wood smoke, quite simple but absolutely delicious.

Les Cassagnes de La Nerthe Rouge 2015 (bio) 60% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre grapes are used in this exciting, organic Côtes du Rhône which replaces the former Domaine Renjarde wine. Made by the same, ambitious winemakers, the Cassagnes comes from a forty year old vineyard planted on limestone and sandstone. The wine is aged in large oak vats to keep the primary freshness of the fruit: plums, blackberries, bing cherries and sloes are the aromas that are conjured up here without being jammy or too sweet. On the palate the purity of the fruit is evident with some spicy notes of freshly crushed black pepper, cloves and lingering notes of liquorice and lavender on the finish. A lovely wine, perfectly balanced between richness and freshness and full of spicy Rhône flavours. Very easy to drink now this wine will âge well for 5-10 years and matches well with game dishes, stews, roast meats and barbecues.

    Domaine Georges Vernay
Fleurs de Mai (FM) IGP Collines Rhodaniennes
    0.75l Red
    €19.00 €15.70
The first vintage of this wine was made in 2010 from vines planted more than 50 years ago by Georges Vernay in an old orchard where once peach varieties called « Mayflower » were grown. Like the Pied de Samson, the vineyard is higher than 300 metres so is no longer in the appellation. Made from Syrah grapes and stylistically like a Côte Rôtie, this is a lovely lyrical wine with notes of plums, figs and wood smoke, quite simple but absolutely delicious with mineral peristence and a juicy, fruity finish. Produced in small quantities and aged in oak vats for eight months this is a wine to be drunk now for the next five years.

Ribs

Ribs and Syrah are practically a match made in heaven. Both are meaty yet tender powerhouses that love a good dose of spice. The smoky, spicy flavours of ribs are a perfect match for the spicy, peppery notes of our Sicilian Syrah by Peter Vinding-Diers. Another option is our 100% Cabernet Franc from Château de Parnay. A bio dynamic wine from Saumur-Champigny. Smooth and well-balanced with slight peppery undertones.

Montecarrubo is planted on the crater of a volcano that has been extinct for more than two million years and is cooled by constant sea breezes. Run according to biodynamic practices, the wines are all based on Syrah grapes, here 50% balanced with the addition of 25% each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. On the nose the wine has notes of blackberries, blueberries and wild herbs. The palate is full and rich and very lively with good plummy fruit flavours and a touch of freshly grated black pepper. On the finish there is good acidity and refreshing, silky tannins. A lovely wine, still young for the moment which will age well for at least another five years.

We discovered the extraordinary Clos d’Entre les Murs when we were tasting with Sebastien Duvallet from Muscadet. The wine has been so well received that we asked Pierre Cadiou to let us taste his red wines. We have been searching for a well-balanced, elegant Loire Cabernet Franc for a while. This organic wine made from young vines is simply made to bring out the lively wild fruit character of hedgerow fruit, rosehips, sloes and cassis. Lying just 50 metres above the Loire river this is a easy drinking, crunchy wine with soft balance and a slightly spicy, fresh finish. A good red wine for fish, light cuisine or slightly chilled as an aperitif.

Chicken

If you keep your grilled chicken quite simple and pure than you have lots of pairing options. However, because of the smoky flavors infused in the meat, grilled chicken goes great with wines that have seen some oak. Our Domaine Camille Paquet is a perfect match. With its pale golden colour, light perfumed nose, lovely orchard and slightly tropical fruit.

The talented Paquet family is making a name for itself in the white wine appellations of the southern Rhône. Brother to Mathieu and son of Michel Paquet of Domaine des Valanges, Camille is the winemaker of the family. He believes in making his wines as naturally as possible using indigineous yeasts, no chemicals and using barrels that are always two or three years old so that the oak will not interfere with the beautiful fruit flavours. 2018 was a great vintage and the wine has attractive, open fresh fruity flavours on the nose, a touch of sweet fruit, some spice, aromas of peach stones and pears with a mango note at the end of the palate. Lovely to drink now, this is a very balanced Macon with lots of flavour to accompany seafood, smoked salmon and grilled fish.

Grilled veggies

When put on the grill, vegetables become more complex in flavor, so they need wines that will be complementary. Our Marigny-Neuf Sauvignon Blanc works great with the deeper flavours that come from a tray of roasted veggies. You can also opt for a red wine as roasting and grilling will caramelize the veggies' sugars and give them almost a meaty richness. Our Super Tuscan "Liberta" is a great match. With its ripe red fruit flavours it is attractive and fresh on the palate with sweet tannins and good balance.

One of the first wines made by Frédéric Brochet who has now expanded his domaine just north of Poitiers to include a complete line of varietal wines. His Marigny-Neuf Sauvignon Blanc remains his best seller and is grown organically in limestone and silex soils. The wine has a very pure, light yellow colour, very good citrus fruit characteristic of the Sauvignon Blanc grape which is complemented with notes of boxtree, mint and wild flowers. Good energy, precise acidity and lovely fresh structure bring out the attractive aromas in this wine. Serve with shrimps, oysters and of course goat’s cheese.

A great value Super Tuscan wine made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and a small quantity of Sangiovese grapes grown on the Colazzi estate. The wine brings out the best of each of these grapes: Merlot's soft tannins, fresh, red fruit aroma’s from the Cabernet Franc, Syrah’s spicy richness and the elegant fragrance of Sangiovese. The wine owes its name to a donation that the City of Florence made to eight local families, among which the former owners of Collazzi, who had valiantly fought for the city’s freedom. Dark, violet coloured with soft, ripe red fruit flavours, attractive and fresh on the palate with sweet tannins and good balance. As the vineyard grows older, the wine becomes richer and more expressive giving it a lot of personality. Matches well with pasta, tomato sauce, meats and cheeses.
