Château de Bousval 2019

Bousval and its creator, Michel Verhaeghe are making great strides. Since their wines were launched, they have won universal praise from wine lovers and sommeliers alike and we would put them up at the top of the Belgian wine pinnacle alongside other beautiful Chardonnays such as La Falize and Clos d’Opleeuw.  It is hard to think that it was only in 2014 that Michel selected five hectares of stony, cold fields to plant a vineyard and produce pure, organic fruity Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.

The 2019 vintage witnessed the vineyard becoming more balanced with better resistance to diseases and the vagaries of the climate. Inspired biodynamic philosophies and practices and new tools (such as a heat gun against late frost) and efforts to stimulate the natural defenses of the plant have proved to be effective. With every harvest the estate learns more about their vine parcels, spreading out the harvest to ensure that each parcel is picked at perfect maturity. The 2019 growing season was fine until the beginning of September when cooler temperatures and rain arrived.  These conditions brought much more freshness to the wines than found in the 2018 vintage.

January 2021 bought the organic certification to the vineyard which is continuing to use bio-dynamic treatments to bring out the estate’s unique character. As owner Michel Verhaeghe explains: “This is not a heritage wine; it is a burgeoning wine. It is the result of an alchemy between the young vine and the Belgian sun, myriad flora and fauna, and the micro-organisms found in the Bousval soil.”. We are delighted to be part of Michel’s journey and love the fun, playful drawings which illustrate the different labels each year.

Unfurling gently with aeration, this Chardonnay has good ripe sweet fruit on the nose, balanced by a saline, tangy scent which leads to pure, crystalline orchard fruit flavours with notes of bergamot and white almond blossom. There is good energy here and long lasting fruit on the palate; a wine with a very bright future. Beautifully balanced and silky, this is an excellent wine for fish and seafood.

Le Petit Gris Vin de Pays des Jardins de Wallonie

This lovely wine charms from the start with its nose of peaches, a touch of mango, candied orange and an attractive sweetness mixed with spicy acidity. The wine spreads out on the palate to show broad strokes of very pure fruit, a cinnamon touch of oak, almonds and lemon zest with a gentle spicy lift of ginger on the finish. This is a beautifully made, pure wine, presented in a flute shaped bottle which would match well with smoked fish and quite spicy foods.

Winemaker Vincent Dienst uses one precise plot to produce this wine, adding some different elements from other parcels to add depth and texture to this wine. Sadly, it suffered greatly from the Spring frosts in 2019 so quantities are very small. One is immediately struck by the precision which runs through the wine adding good concentration, savoury salinity and exciting fruit aromas of red grapefruit, peaches and limes with subtle touches of cinnamon and toast from the oak; (half of the wine is aged in oak). This is a Chablis styled wine with lovely structure and intensity that in 2019 has more concentration and length that the Gouttes d’O.

The Pinot Noir grapes for this wine are grown in in a one-hectare plot situated at the top of their domain in the back corner next to the forest. Lightly coloured and very fresh, this is natural wine with pretty aromas of cherries and some raspberries with appetising notes of cinnamon, spices, moss and oak. There is good persistence on the palate and a lingering floral note of violets and forests. Drinking very well already, this is wine has fine tannins and a silky texture.
