Bordeaux 2017

Bordeaux 2017
At Thienpont Wine we are ready to present you our “En Primeur Selection 2017”. In these days of G.D.P.R. we have abstained from bombarding you with offers on a daily basis but we now have over half of the prices confirmed for our allocations and from today onwards we will be updating our En Primeur page on the website as soon as the latest châteaux release their prices. Make sure to check this page regularly since everyday new wines will be listed.

Fiona recently wrote about the 2017 vintage in her latest blog:

“Personally, at our estates, we were so delighted by the fresh, fruity aromas when we first filled up the vats that we wanted to preserve this purity and acidity as best as we could. Many others did the same. The wines may have lightness and a silkiness that we have not seen for a while in Bordeaux but they are not shirkers and I have been impressed to see that the indexes of tannins have been around the same as recent, richer tasting vintages. This will be a vintage to be enjoyed in the decade or so when the beautiful fruit and floral elements are still in evidence, a vintage therefore to enjoy before opening your 2015s and 2016s.”

  1. Château La Prade
    Francs, Côtes de Bordeaux
    0,75l Red
    Primeur
    €12.50 €10.33
Made from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc with about half of the vineyard damaged by frost. Extremely juicy, fruity, cassis flavours in the nose; soft and ripe on the palate, very forward and sweet with attractive spice; round and soft, finish. Very attractive.
  2. Château Puygueraud
    Francs, Côtes de Bordeaux
    0,75l Red
    Primeur
    €12.64 €10.45
Only a tiny amount of Puygueraud was produced this year as 70% of the vineyards were lost to the frost. The blend this year is 63% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 7% Malbec. Dark deep colour, pretty nose, smells of limestone and ripe fruit; soft and lush on the palate; quite earthy and dark towards the finish but balanced by good spice and freshness. Attractive wine at a very good price.
  3. Château La Chenade
    Lalande-de-Pomerol
    0,75l Red
    Primeur
    €17.30 €14.30
Only 800 cases were made this year so our allocation of this wine has been halfed as a result of the frost. Made from a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the wine is deep purple crimson in colour, bright, fruity and plummy. It has black fruit flavours, a lifted, fresh texture, nice balance and weight, and slightly chewy tannins. Well-made.
  4. Château Puy-Blanquet
    Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
    0,75l Red
    Primeur
    €17.70 €14.63
Half of the crop was lost to the frost this year. The remaining wine is a blend of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Pretty purple colour. Nice scented red fruit character with hints of coffee and some oak. .Sweet and spicy on the attack with good tannins, good balance and an attractive sweet finish.
  5. Château Montlandrie
    Castillon, Côtes de Bordeaux
    0,75l Red
    Primeur
    €20.30 €16.78
Denis Durantou’s Côtes de Castillon is one of his favourite wines of 2017 and certainly it charms with its bright deep crimson colour, its very fresh flavours of small blackberries and sloes and its very attractive silky, zippy texture. There is good depth of flavour, fine tannins and a tight, mineral finish.
  6. Château Couhins
    Pessac-Léognan
    0,75l Red
    Primeur
    €20.80 €17.19
Dark intense colour with purple rim, lots of good autumn berry flavours in the nose with classic graphite undertones. Good precise attack with plummy fruit, good tannins which are very present and a balanced palate;tight and quite structured on the palate but with good lift and acidity.
  7. Château Potensac
    Médoc
    Cru Bourgeois 0,75l Red
    Primeur
    €23.60 €19.50
Bright and vivid colour and very good persistence in the nose. Lovely fruit and good intensity wirh lovely berry fruit on the attack, some minerals and very good, crunchy tannic structure. A favourite wine which represents good value and should develop very well over the next 5-10 years. Only 55% of the production this year as a result of the frosts.
  8. Les Fiefs de Lagrange
    Saint-Julien
    0,75l Red
    Primeur
    €24.60 €20.33
A lovely wine in spite of obvious frost damage, this is pretty and fresh with lovely sweet, ripe cassis flavours, soft almost, tender, good core of freshness mid-palate; a little oaky towards the finish which has yet to integrated but still an attractive wine.
  9. Château Couhins
    Pessac-Léognan
    0,75l White
    Primeur
    €25.49 €21.07
This was one of the earliest harvests in the last decade for the white wines of Pessac-Léognan and the results have been very successful. 90% Savignon Blanc and 10% Sauvignon Gris. Fresh and sweetly aromatic on the nose, very perfumed and creamy with clear cut grass flavours of Sauvignon. Well structured on the palate with good intensity and length with citrus fruits echoeing on the end of the palate.
