Franchetti own just one hectare of this tiny contrada and produce only 2,000 bottles of wine here. It is called Sciaranuova and is located at 850 meters altitude. In Sicilian, the name means “new lava flow” and this is a relatively new flow from the 1600s that has turned into thick gravel. The wines produced from this site are bright, aromatic, and have a rich taste of fermented hay and a dusty herbal quality. Like other contradas, you need to pay attention to this wine as it builds up on your palate. At first it appears quite delicate with wildflowers and herbs such as sage and eucalyptus appearing but then the wild autumn fruit flavours take over and mix with notes of balsam, licorice, and minerals. The finish is precise and quite intense leaving an echo of all its flavours behind it.
