(Available autumn 2022)
Thienpont Wine is delighted to offer “En Primeur” the Famille Perrin and Château de Beaucastel wines from the 2020 vintage. We had the privilege to taste these wines recently with Matthieu Perrin and were very impressed by the beautiful definition and silky texture already apparent in these wines.
The 2020 harvest was very healthy with beautiful, juicy, well-ripened grapes and reasonable alcohol levels, good acidity and already a lovely balance: The first tastings forecast a very fine vintage with a long aging potential.
Below you can find the different wines with our tasting notes and their prices.
*The wines can be reserved "En Primeur" until the end of October.
Delivery from autumn 2022.
- Château de Beaucastel -
Château de Beaucastel is an historic 100-hectare estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In its famous soils filled with rounded stones deposited by the Rhône, all 13 of the permitted grapes of the appellation are grown and are used in the wines. Since the 14th century this great appellation has been tied to the history of the Popes in Avignon. For five generations the Perrin family have created an extraordinary wine and a great reputation. Today, each member of the family contributes to the estate and the family wines which are run on biodynamic principles and the search for truth, balance, and elegance
0.75lCôtes du Rhône0.75l Red€20.30 €16.78Matthieu Perrin tells us that Coudoulet should not be thought of as a “little Châteauneuf but as a great Côtes du Rhone” and certainly this confident, expressive wine is open and ripe with notes of oriental spice, incense, and black fruit. Juicy and smooth, the fruit takes a back seat to the spice this year which makes the wine even more interesting and appetizing. The Mourvèdre grape which is becoming more and more interesting in the blend as the result of climate change (it is the latest ripening grape) adds good tannic structure and a lingering ripe complexity to the finish.
0.75lChâteauneuf-du-Pape0.75l Red€72.50 €59.92The Perrin family talk about the 2020 vintage as the “harmonie absolue” and a brief look at the weather patterns reveals less heat, more wind, perfect flowering, and a beautiful long, warm summer where the Mistral kept the vines fresh and humid. This wine reflects the quality of the vintage with great freshness and intensity on the attack and a rather exotic element to the fruit with spice, blood orange, violet and a touch of black olives in the nose. There is lovely freshness on the attack with great intensity and spice. It is dominated by Mourvèdre and Grenache grapes, the former contributing its lightly reductive, appetizing quality and the latter its flamboyance. There is so much life to the wine that it keeps revealing new flavours which are richly textured and well balanced. More profound than the 2019, this is a great wine that should be left for 5-8 years to reveal all its potential.
- Sélections Parcéllaires -
The Perrin Family strives to reveal the soul of each individual terroir that they prize for its authenticity, and its specificity. In each of these wines, the "Famille Perrin "signature" is apparent: mastering an organic and biodynamic approach to bring out the authentic character and to tell the story of the small vineyard parcels, these are some of the undiscovered jewels of the Southern Rhône.
0.75l2020 Les Hauts de JulienVieilles Vignes Vinsobres0.75l Red€29.50 €24.38The vineyard is located 40 km north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape at an altitude of 300m benefiting from a cool climate, perfect for Syrah. Les Hauts de Julien is made with grapes from an old plot of vines (around 90 years old) co-planted in Syrah and Grenache and the Perrin family are delighted to highlight this lesser-known appellation. Here the soil is more limestone than sandy pebbles and the influence of the Alps can be found in the excellent tension apparent in the wine. Matthieu Perrin calls it the “best Syrah made in the southern Rhône” and certainly we appreciate the bright, dark purple red colour; the soft, ripe aromas of black fruits and black olives and its spicy, umami, appetising character. This is a very exciting wine from the great 2020 vintage. Max. 6 btls/pp
0.75l2020 L’ArgnéeVieilles Vignes Gigondas0.75l Red€53.50 €44.21This is a magical vineyard, close to Clos des Tourelles with a small plot of less than 1 hectare of pre-Phyloxera Grenache vines (around 100 years old). The yields are tiny, and the production is limited to 1500 bottles a year. With gorgeous density of fruit on the nose, this wine has a ripe perfume of roses, violets, incense and plums. It is round and velvety with excellent concentration and beautiful fresh tannins. If you haven’t tried this rare wine yet, we urge you to do it; old vine magic in a top vintage. Max. 6 btls/pax.
0.75lGigondas0.75l Red€53.50 €44.21We have a great affection for this beautiful domain with its historic three-hectare vineyard of very old Grenache on limestone soils with a marly-sandy base which is the last remaining clos in Gigondas. Glossy, dark, and purple rich, the wine is soft and spicey in the nose with quite discrete fruit at first which opens up on the palate to show flavours of sloes, blueberries and cloves. Although this wine has immense appeal, it is a wine made for aging with a great potential that does not reveal itself immediately. Fresh and mouth-watering on the finish, this very successful wine will develop ever greater complexity over the years. Max. 6 btls/pp

- Les blancs du Château de Beaucastel -
0.75lCôtes du Rhône0.75l White€30.00 €24.79The 30-hectare Coudoulet vineyard lies to the east of the estate and is often referred to as the “baby Beaucastel”; three hectares are devoted to white wines. Like Beaucastel, the soils is composed of a Molasse seabed covered by diluvial alpine deposits. These pebbles, the famous “Galets Roulés” take in the heat during the day and let it if off slowly at night which gives a good, even start to the growth of the vines in the Spring. The wonderful 2020 vintage was quite early and produced a white Coudoulet which is precise and very pretty. Unlike the Beaucastel whites, the Coudoulet has 30% Viognier in the blend, quite unusual for the southern Rhône. This makes the wine more expressive and fruitier with notes of Cavaillon melon, pear, cherry blossom and orchards. Lively and silky on the palate this is a bright, fresh wine with a touch of floral sweetness in the finish.
0.75lChâteauneuf-du-Pape0.75l White€88.00 €72.73Just as with the 2020 reds, we immediately noticed more freshness and precision in the white wines from Beaucastel. You can almost feel the effect of the wind in the pure, clean aromas on the nose of this very elegant and classy wine. The aromas unfold gradually revealing a mineral flintiness first, and a steely, intense texture that gradually opens up in the nose and on the palate to reveal ripe fruit, balanced sweetness, floral notes of almond blossom and summer flowers and an abiding freshness. Although it is the Roussanne grape that makes up 80% of the blend, there is a fruity juiciness which the other white grape varieties bring to the wine. This is a very complete wine, at this stage a little reserved but you can feel the potential that will gradually become more apparent over the next few years. Drink young for the elegance of the fruit or in a decade for a perfect expression of texture, fruit, minerals and oak.
0.75lRoussanne - Vieilles Vignes Châteauneuf-du-Pape0.75l White€149.00 €123.14It is not surprising that there is so much power and potential in this legendary wine which collectors scramble to get a few of the 6000 bottles made for their cellars. The century old Roussanne vines here are the last grapes to be picked during the harvest, along with the old Mourvèdres. Maybe it is the drop-dead glamour of this wine, but I adore its beauty and status and certainly believe it is one of the greatest white wines of France. The very old vines come from a three-hectare plot in the cooler, northern part of the appellation. There is gorgeous creaminess in the texture with expressive notes of blossom, honey, beeswax, peach stones, almond flowers which are complemented on the palate with a great acidity and concentration. The intensity of this wine, especially in a precise vintage such as 2020 is incredible. Like the Beaucastel Blanc this is either a wine to drink during the first three or four years of its life or after cellaring for another 10-15 years where it takes on beautiful tones of hazelnut, spice, beeswax and ripe fruit, always with this abiding mineral freshness. - Famille Perrin ~ Les Crus -
Here is a small selection of the The Perrin Family's range of different wines from the Southern Rhône Valley. With the same expertise and the same passion as for Château de Beaucastel, the family prides itself in bringing out the true character of each terroir, using organic and biodynamic methods and perfecting the art of blending to bring out the freshness of the aromas.
0.75lLes Christins Vacqueyras0.75l Red€15.50 €12.81This vineyard to the south of the Dentelles de Montmirail is situated at an altitude of 350 metres, at the top of the village with stony terraces and clay and sand in its subsoil. The domain produces a wine of the south, consisting of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, with a lush nose of plums, strawberries and various wild herbs such as thyme and laurel. On the palate, there is pleasant acidity, salty and fruity notes of wild strawberries and rock plants and on the finish, a subtle hint of fir trees. A lovely, welcoming wine which can be drunk young and enjoyed for a decade.
0.75lLa Gille Gigondas0.75l Red€21.01 €17.36An exceptional vineyard in the middle of the Gigondas hillside with fabulous views over the impressive countryside. Enjoying fresh breezes from the valley, this is a cooler climate which makes pure, saline wines. The wine consists of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, grown on clay and limestone soils. In the nose, the freshness is immediately apparent, with aromas of small black berries and a touch of blood orange. On the palate, there are beautifully ripe tannins, forest fruit flavours and a fine long aftertaste. A very energetic wine! Delicious.
0.75lLes Sinards Châteauneuf-du-Pape0.75l Red€31.99 €26.44The name les Sinards refers to the former owner of these vineyards, situated just next to Château de Beaucastel, where the grapes from their young vines are used in this blend. The classic GSM (Grenache, Syrah and Mouvèdre) blend brings out the distinct, lovely smokey, fruit flavour from each grape variety: raspberries from the Grenache, plums from the Syrah and blueberries from the Mouvèdre. Round and textured on the palate with good lingering spice, this is a real charmer for current drinking.
