Sainte-Croix-du-Mont

Saint Croix du Mont is one of the few dessert wine appellations of Bordeaux facing Sauternes on the right hand bank of the Garonne River.  It benefits from the autumn fogs that affect the Sauternes region and produces semi-sweet and sweet dessert wines from mainly Semillon (85% of the blend) and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.   About 500 hectares of vineyards are planted on clay limestone soils centered around the pretty village of Sainte Croix and face south and west.  The wines are rich golden coloured, round and full bodied with a smooth taste and good aromas of apricot, honey and acacia flowers.  Less intense than Sauternes wines and considerably cheaper, these are well-made, quality wines.  They match well with blue cheese, nuts, foie gras and almond cake.
