Montagne Saint-Émilion

Montagne Saint-Émilion

With its Romanesque church and picturesque village, Montagne St. Emilion is famous for its viticultural school and several good restaurants, including our favourite, Le Clos Mirande.  It is one of the best known of the St. Emilion satellites and is the largest with almost 220 growers. The average production of wine here amounts to around 770,000 cases per year and the principal grape variety is Merlot with some Cabernet Franc.   While “montagne” or “mountain” might be a slight exaggeration, this is an area of rolling hills made up of clay and limestone which are very similar to those found in neighboring Saint Emilion.  There are some good wine values in this appellation and the quality is quite high.
