In honour of our American winegrowers, we are offering you an elegant wooden case containing one bottle each of three remarkable California Cabernets all from the exceptional 2021 vintage:
- Ridge Vineyards, Montebello, 2021
This 2021 Monte Bello is a wine of wonder and will be talked about for decades ahead. The blend is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot but the drought made small, concentrated berries which reduced the yields by one third. To compensate for this, 60% of the wine went through malolactic fermentation in tank. This is a classic Monte Bello, smooth, silky on the entry and full of mulberry and cassis flavours which will develop well over the next 20 to 25 years. Dark and deep with a savoury note of dill and spice which adds interest to the concentrated Cabernet fruit, this is a beautifully concentrated wine with a taut structure which will take some years to unfurl and reveal its true class. A true classic.
- Spottswoode, Cabernet-Sauvignon, 2021
Spottswoode 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, the family’s 40th anniversary vintage, is everything that we love in a classic Napa Valley wine. Despite its intensity and layers of flavour, it gives the impression of a fresh, energetic, and very poised wine. From the offset, violet, iris and blackcurrant aromas come wafting out of the glass with a mineral undertow of mineral and graphite. Every sip reveals new flavours from plummy fruit, cedar, warm earthy tones, a touch of licorice and a gorgeous, refined structure. Made from a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, this will be a wine for long aging if you can stop yourself from drinking this too soon. Having faced a challenging climate in 2021 which included frost and drought, Beth Novak and winemaker Aron Weinkauf have made a super wine in 2021.
- Dominus Estate, 2021
A legendary Dominus, born in the warm, successful 2021 vintage, this wine wears its power and its density with great elegance. The gravelly, loamy soils retain moisture which means that Dominus is one of the rare dry farmed estates in the Napa Valley. Farmed organically, the 2021 Dominus is made from a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. In the nose there are beautiful notes of fresh flowers, incense and blue and black fruit and the wine uncoils gradually in the glass to reveal a velvety texture and a structure which is impressive without being imposing. Throughout, there is an abiding freshness, which drives the wine onto a very vibrant finish. A great success and a wine we will be talking about for years to come.
My tasting notes are etched into the case and these wines will offer great drinking pleasure from 2029 until 2036
They represent our favourite Cabernets from the U.S. and the three wines are all high scoring, collectible and rare.
