2022 | Château de la Maltroye

Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru

This very limited production comes from a tiny 33 ares parcel on the southern end of the climat and was picked relatively early during the last week of August. The first quality that one notices is the perfumed, aerian quality of the fruit with notes of white peaches, a touch of honeysuckle on the nose and the juicy notes of pears, Cantaloupe melon and spice on the palate. There is an attractive note of oak in the structure which helps to define the wine, with a good amount of dry extract that serves as the foundation of the wine, lifting it up, showing its depth and power. This gorgeous wine finishes with juicy notes of citrus acidity and a lingering finish. Don’t be tempted to drink this too young.

The story

Château

Château de la Maltroye

plus minus
Founded in 1941, this family owned domain is now in the hands of Jean-Pierre Cournut, the third generation. He traded in a career in the aeronautical business to return to the family home in Chassagne Montrachet in 1993 when his father fell ill.
The château itself is found near the top of the village of Chassagne. Built on the ruins of a15th-century chateau, the distinctive 18th-century mansion with diamond-patterned glazed tiles has been restored from top to bottom by Jean-Pierre. The impressive vaulted cellars date from the 15th century original building.

To illustrate how complicated this part of Burgundy can be, Jean-Pierre leads visitors to the back of the house where the vines slope down to the main road. The vineyard is in the climat of the Maltroie 1er Cru and comprises three parts: Maltroie, Maltroie Crêtes and the walled Clos de la Maltroye named after the chateau; three different appellations; all planted with both red and white grapes. Jean-Pierre Cournut is both owner and winemaker.

Maltroye is one of the largest domains in Chassagne with 15 hectares of land, 13 of which are in Chassagne and 2 are in Santenay, with 70% of the production comprising Premier Cru wine. Around 70,000 bottles are produced each year (60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir). The jewel of the domain is the Clos de Chateau, a monopole comprising 1½ hectares of Chardonnay and 1 ½ hectares of Pinot Noir. Our selection

Grape

Chardonnay

plus minus
Chardonnay is the chameleon grape; it grows in almost every wine producing country in the world and its character changes according to the local soil, climate and wine culture.   It is the perfect all rounder varying from rather neutral, mass produced wines to the pinnacle of greatness in the Grands Crus of Bourgogne.    Its fruity character is a natural canvas for the winemaker:  ferment it at cool temperatures in stainless steel or cement and the wine is light, fruity, fresh with good acidity and minerality.   Ferment the wine in oak barrels and stir the lees and the grape releases a rich, buttery character with tropical fruits and great depth.   It loves the interaction with yeasts as is most evident in Champagne where it is the most important grape in the famous champagnes of the region and in sparkling wines throughout the world.

The Chardonnay grape has inspired many clones such as the Dijon, Davis or Mendoza clones that are used frequently in the new world and often have exotic fruit flavours of pineapple, mango and passion fruit.  Cool climate chardonnay is known for its orchard fruit character – green apple, pear and quince that can develop honeyed and nutty aromas if aged in oak.   Chardonnays vary in sweetness; most white Burgundies are dry while the world’s best selling chardonnay, Kendall Jackson from California, has always had several degrees of sugar in the wine.  Our selection
