2020 | La Guía

Ribera del Duero D.O., Viñas Viejas De Soria

This is one of the most exciting wines we have tasted from Spain recently. It is made from very old vines, 91% red Tinto Fino and 9% white Albillo, which are planted together. Made very gently with 30% whole berry fermentation and 16 months aging in oak, less than 2000 bottles of this magical wine are produced. Dark and intense colour, you immediately feel the concentration and intensity in the nose: minerals, wild berries, and herbs first, then freshness next with a surprising uplift from the altitude. This is a silky and elegant but very precise wine, keeping its balance like a tightrope walker between intense fruit and rocky soils. A fascinating wine which just lingers forever on the palate. Drink now for next ten years.

The story

Producer

Aurelio García Herraiz

plus minus
Once upon a time in the picturesque Spanish village of La Alberca de Záncara, there lived a passionate winemaker named Aurelio Garcia. His ambition? Producing wines that highlight the unique qualities of different regions in Spain. With his wife, Micaela Rubio, he focuses on preserving old vineyards and native grape varieties.

Aurelio explores various grape varieties and soils in Ribera del Júcar, Sierra de Gredos, and Ribera del Duero to capture the core of each terroir. He values old vines for their ability to produce pure and fresh wines that reflect their origins. In the Sierra de Gredos, he discovered the expressive potential of Garnacha grapes grown at high altitudes, resulting in vibrant and complex wines reminiscent to Burgundy. In Ribera del Duero's Soria, Aurelio crafts a single wine using Tempranillo grapes, incorporating the white Albillo Mayor variety to soften its firm tannins and marked acidity.

Aurelio's winemaking philosophy focusses on the natural qualities of the grapes. He meticulously selects grapes that embody freshness and vitality, employing manual harvesting and a rigorous selection process. Whole grapes are used to express the character of the vineyard, and ageing in different vessels based on the wine's needs. Known for their exceptional quality, Aurelio's wines reflect his commitment to preserving old vines, maintaining natural balance, and minimal intervention.

Thienpont Wine proudly represents two projects by Aurelio Garcia: "Alto de la Cruz" and "La Guia." These wines exemplify Spain's diverse terroir and rich viticultural heritage. They embody a profound connection with their terroir, dedication to preserving Spain's winemaking legacy, and a passion for exceptional wines that pay homage to the past while embracing the future. Grape

Grenache

plus minus
Red Grenache, or “Garnacha” as the grape is known in Spain, is the world’s fourth most planted variety. Yet, it is less well known, probably because its name is hardly ever seen on a wine label. Grenache tends to produce light-coloured wines with good roundness; brimming with juicy strawberry fruit they show moderate acidity and tannins. Thus the grape is usually blended with other varieties such as Tempranillo in Spain or Syrah in France.

Grenache excels in hot, dry climates and is found in Southern France, Spain and the warm regions of Australia and California. To produce truly excellent wines such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône or Priorat in Spain, yields need to be restricted and great care needs to be taken in making the wines.   Grenache excels as the vine ages and the old abandoned terraces in the Rhône and in Priorat have produced some beautiful old, gnarly vines which create legendary wines with dark, silky tannins and notes of berries, spice, herbs and wild flowers.

Grenache is also popular in the production of rosé wines, usually bright pink in colour and strawberry-scented as in Tavel, which is dry but blessed with the fruity sweetness of Grenache.  Grenache is becoming increasingly popular in the New World, especially in California and Australia and is also used to make fortified wines such as Banyuls.  Our selection
