2021 | Ridge Vineyards
Sonoma Valley, Pagani Ranch
Pagani Ranch is an iconic Zinfandel vineyard and lies at the western part of the Sonoma appellation, near the coast and has very old vines (between 90 to 120 years old) although some of them have been replanted in 2013 and 2018. The estate has been worked by the same family for the last four generations. The field blend is 90% Zinfandel, 5% Petite Sirah and 5% Alicante Bouschet. There is a cool climate here; the vineyards often lay under a blanket of fog until the end of the morning. In 2021 Light rain and dry conditions kept yields down and led to beautiful concentration in the grapes. After fermentation the wine is aged in 100% air dried American oak, most of it already aged for up to 2-3 years. This is a full and generous Zinfandel with a beautiful crimson colour and upfront fresh fruit with flavours of cherries, dark chocolate, raspberry, blueberry, pepper and black olives, all strung together by lingering acidity. On the palate, the wine is exuberant and spicy with bright freshness which balances the power and richness. Great layers of gravel, flowers, cherry fruit and spice echo in the finish.

The story
Château
Ridge Vineyards
Ridge is one of America’s oldest and most respected wine estates. In 1962, it produced its first Monte Bello, followed two years later by its inaugural Zinfandel. Since then, Ridge has championed single-vineyard wines, seeking out rare and remarkable plots across California where climate, soil, and grape variety come together in perfect harmony. This philosophy is rooted in the belief that the greatest wines in the world are expressions of their terroir. Ridge today manages over 20 distinctive vineyard sites, notably in Sonoma County and on the legendary Monte Bello estate (dating back to 1885), perched high above the San Andreas Fault in Santa Cruz. It is now one of California’s leading producers of certified organic wines.
The estate was founded by four Stanford scientists in 1962 and guided for decades by the visionary Paul Draper, renowned for his commitment to “pre-industrial winemaking”: selecting intensely flavoured fruit, intervening only when necessary, and allowing the wine to reflect the richness and character of the grapes. Since the 2011 harvest, Ridge has listed all ingredients on its labels to underline just how little is needed to make a truly great wine. Today, Paul Draper is surrounded by a talented team of winemakers, led by John Olney. Our selection
