Rheinhessen

The largest of the 13 different German wine regions, with almost 26,500 hectares of vineyards, Rheinhessen is on the southern bank of the Rhine between the towns of Worms and Bingen. A variety of different grapes are grown here with Muller Thurgau plantings surpassing Riesling as the most popular grape. The Rheinhessen has suffered in the past as the home of Leibfraumilch (Blue Nun being the most well known brand) and the Silvaner grape and it is only just becoming recognized as a site for talented winemakers and some top vineyards.

Known as the land of the thousand hills, this is undulating countryside with vines sharing the countryside with forests and orchards. The best vineyard sites are found in the north, near the Rhine River with the Rhine Terrace area between Nackenheim and Oppenheim being the most prized site.

Thanks to the new generation trained at the Geisenheim Wine University and the VDP classification system (the association of 200 or so German Prädikat Wine Estates), the quality of the Rheinhessen wines is once again being noticed.
