Château Alcée

Castillon, Côtes de Bordeaux

We are impressed by Nicolas Thienpont’s Castillon wine which lies just next to the parcels of L’Hêtre in Saint-Genès de Castillon. Sadly, the old vines (88% Merlot and 12%Cabernet Franc) which are farmed organically, were badly affected by mildew and drought so the yields are very small. The wine is dark, intense and very rich in colour with a quite floral nose of violets, iris and tulips. Very smooth on the attack where the texture brings on the fruit, backed up by some oak, some mineral spiciness and a mocha richness. Everything here is in place, very fresh, and at the end there is a good touch of mango freshness which adds a good note of fruit to the finish.
