Château Haut-Bailly

Pessac-Léognan
Grand Cru Classé de Graves
1,5
Red
The inaugural vintage for the superb new cellar where only 20 of the 50 beautiful new vats were needed as yields were way down. As always Véronique Sanders has a word to sum up the vintage; this year it is “humility.” Like many others she cites the hard work and the uncertainty that the weather throw at them but says that having a dry August and September saved the vintage with the small berries and good density produced as a result. Made from a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the wine has a composure and a coolness which throws up aromas of fresh autumn fruit, cedar and saline minerality. The tannins are spheric and provide a lovely structured backbone to the wine. A typical Haut Bailly with the characteristic elegance and length. Max. 24 btls.

Created quite recently, in 1987, Pessac-Léognan is a sub appellation of the Graves, although the region as a whole claims to be the oldest wine region in Bordeaux dating back to the Roman times. It is thanks to the efforts of André Lurton, one of the best-known growers in the area, that the appellation was formed. ...
