Château Lafite Rothschild

Pauillac
1er Grand Cru Classé

As previously mentioned, Mouton and Lafite have almost the exact blends in their 2023, and both chateaux took their time to pick their Cabernets during the last days of September when an Indian summer calmed everyone’s nerves and the date of picking was decided almost by instinct with an innate knowledge of every parcel. For the record, the blend here is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. This is a classic Lafite with fresh, mineral and graphite notes in the nose which mingle with the clearly defined Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. This wine builds up beautifully on the palate with all the classic grace that you expect from Lafite where new flavours and nuances are revealed gradually. Perfect ripeness, pretty, sweet fruit at the core of this wine which expands outwards with tendrils of fine tannin, noble bitterness, and a sapid finale. Although quite understated, this is a superb wine made under the aegis of Saskia de Rothschild whose move to biodynamic viticulture and many other great regenerative initiatives are really paying off.
