Château Puygueraud

Francs, Côtes de Bordeaux
Primeur

One of the recent changes at Puygueraud is that the old parcel of Malbec has been pulled out and replaced by massale selection vines which are now 5 years old. The blend today is and 90% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. Like many estates in the Côtes of Bordeaux, the grapes were hit badly by mildew but with great work in the vineyard Nicolas Thienpont and his team managed to have good yields around 43,5 hl/ha. This is round, full and exciting from dark plum colour to a nose of cassis and autumn fruit; on the attack the wine is full bodied and fresh with good acidity and lots of acidulated fruit. Lively and fresh with good dark, supple tannins. Despite the tropical conditions in the Spring and then the dry and hot Summer, outside of the two periods of heatwave, the freshness in the grapes was maintained because of the cool evenings. This is a very pretty and lively Puygueraud.

After brilliant studies in law and philosophy in Bordeaux, Paris and Switzerland, Nicolas taught philosophy in Rheims for several years. It was not until 1983 that the vineyards at Puygueraud called him back to his native Bordeaux. His first vintage ...
