Domaine David Moret, Saint-Romain, 2016

I adore the Riesling grape and especially when it is in the hands of one of the greatest German wine producers, Egon Muller.   For this wine he has teamed up with Slovakian winemaker Miroslav Petrech with whom he has a great relationship.   The grapes are grown in a beautiful old château (now also a successful spa and hotel) owned by the aunt of Valeska Müller, the wife of Egon. Situated in southern Slovakia on the banks of the Danube River, grapes have been grown here since the Roman times.  The 2018 Belà Riesling is very fresh and quite rich with exceptional aromas of white blossom, orchard fruit and perfume.  On the palate the wine is crisp, dry and pure with lovely flavours of peaches and melons.  An expressive wine with gorgeous fruit flavours which I love pairing with easy supper dishes such as grilled sardines, pasta with clams, poached cod or just with creamy cheeses with hunks of sourdough bread.  A great Riesling, made by a master at a price that is so affordable.

Domaine Boillot, Brussellions, Moulin-à-Vent, 2014

Passopisciaro, Passorosso, Terre Siciliane IGT, 2016

Domaine Jean Grivot,
La Combe d’Orveaux, Chambolle-Musigny, 2015

Perfumed and floral in the nose with good freshness and red fruit.  On the palate the wine is a little closed at first but then opens with some aeration to become fruity with notes of strawberry, cherry and a hint of pomegranate.  Quite rich on the palate, this wine is drinking very well know and should be good for early to mid-term drinking.

Domaine François Raveneau,
Butteaux, Chablis, 2012

Given a couple of hours’ aeration.  At first the wine is very saline, lively and showing great persistence.  Very youthful with flavours of blossom, white pepper, spice, spring flowers.  At the end of the palate, you taste the concentration and precision in this wine. Tasting beautifully now.

Domaine François Raveneau,
Blanchot, Chablis, 2015

More expressive in the nose, and still very young, you feel the intensity of the fruit coming from these very old vines.  Rich and fruity in the nose, the wine quickly expands on the palate to show expressive notes of orchard fruit, some exotic notes of kiwi and mango but above all great, natural concentration and length.  A good complement to the Butteaux. Gorgeous to drink now where its ripe fruit and richness is at its best.

Domaine Jean Grivot,
Aux Boudots, Nuits Saint-Georges, 2012

This wine was opened around 4 hours before serving.  Bright and glowing, with impressive freshness as if it is just emerging from its shell. Soft red fruit flavours of summer fruit, cherries and floral, violet notes.  Lovely balance and liveliness.  This wine is perfect to drink now and shows impressive elegance – much more Vosne style than Nuits.

Domaine Jean Grivot,
Les Beaux Monts, Vosne-Romanée, 2012

Spicy, brooding, intense and a little reticent in the nose at first.  There is lots of black fruit here, a gorgeous structure and quite spicy tannins.  Then the wine begins to open up showing lots of beauty and glamour ; incredibly silky and a lovely vein of acidity running through to a very elegant finale.  Just beginning to reach its drinking point but this could last for years.

Domaine Jean Grivot,
Richebourg, 2013

This is an absolutely stunning Richebourg which continues the run of 2011, 2012 and now 2013 Richebourg which are now all gorgeous to drink. Crushed berries, summer flowers, violets and cassis, a touch of wild herbs – all brought together in a wine that has a very complex nose, lots going on in the palate, an explosion of fresh flavours that broadens out to reveal ripe, aromatic fruit and a suave, full finish.

Domaine François Raveneau,
Valmur, Chablis, 2012

Served in a magnum :  ripe round, rich and broad in the nose, pure Chardonnay with the rocky hillside making itself felt in the wine’s tension and texture.  A wine that is showing beautifully now but is like a racehorse, raring to go but with lots of life ahead of it.  On the palate and with some time in the glass, the wine becomes sweet and almost exotic with ripe fruit and a fabulous tenacity through to the finish. Great move back to Chablis with the cheese (especially the Epoisses!)

Domaine François Raveneau,
Clos, Chablis 2006

Fascinating wine with so many facets like a diamond.  On the nose, there are nots of wild flowers, orchard fruit, sweet Chardonnay, anise, dill, wild herbs and grasses, honey and fennel.   The wine keeps these flavours swirling around from the nose through to the finish.  Lots of precision, beautiful balance and such complexity that the wine reveals a different facet of itself with every sip.  Still so young, one gets the feeling that this vintage could go on for many years yet.

Domaine Thomas, Le Pierrier, Sancerre, 2017

Take a look at some of the reasonably priced 2013 Bordeaux

I often say that there is no such thing as a bad vintage in Bordeaux thanks to huge improvements in winemaking and adapting viticulture to our changing climate. However, there are vintages that get stuck between two better and mediatic vintages that are often overlooked. Although the growing conditions during the summer of 2013 were good, the rest of the year was wet and stormy. Yet in well-drained terroirs and particularly in the northern part of the Médoc, some very pretty, soft, attractive wines were produced. Six years later, while most of the wine trade turned its attention to the 2012 and the 2014 vintages, certain wines are showing beautifully and are delicious to drink now.

I especially recommend Chateau Fonbel, Saint Emilion Grand Cru, a particular favourite of ours, made by the great Vauthier family of Château Ausone which is brimming with soft red fruit character that blends well with the more earthy, cedary flavours of the region. It has lovely depth and soft tannins with some interesting spicy notes on the finish. From the other side of Bordeaux, come two Belgian owned estates in St. Estèphe which show very good autumn/hedgerow fruit flavours with great polish and verve and a lively tannic structure. We still have a few bottles of Château Phélan-Ségur, owned by Sea-Invest’s Philippe Van de Vyvere which showed beautifully at a tasting last Friday and of Château Clauzet, owned until recently by Maurice Velge, which has a mineral freshness that offsets the fruit nicely. Pick-up these wines for current drinking while waiting for more weightier vintages to come around.

Churchill's, 10 Years Old Tawny,Douro

Grivot Burgundies

Probably the most difficult question for Burgundy lovers is to know when the wines are ready to drink.  In general, the wines taste beautifully fresh and fruity when tasting them straight out of the cask, only to close up and become silent sirens once they are bottled.

Catch a Burgundy at the right moment and you hit the “sweet spot”; that perfect moment when the wine is opening up again, unfurling like a flower to reveal a wonderful combination of sweet fruit, freshness, purity and different layers of flavour flowing to a lingering finish.  That feeling is what makes fans of Burgundy to continue to search for the Holy Grail.  I had this sensation twice this past week (lucky me!). Once was a fabulous 2002 Roumier Cras Chambolle Musigny, so beautifully fruity and sweet it was almost too moreish and again today when tasting through some Grivot wines with clients.

First up the 2013 wines which after five years of bottle aging are unfolding in such an elegant manner.  The 2013 Grivot Les Bossières Vosne Romanée, from the vineyard just below the Grivot cellars has fresh, spicy plum fruit entwined with layers of white tobacco, cinnamon, wood smoke and autumn fruit.  The 2013 Grivot La Combe d’Orveaux Chambolle Musigny has a nose of fresh redcurrants and wild strawberries which is just opening up with great reverberation and a purity which comes from the limestone soils found above the grand crus of Échezeaux and Musigny.   Finally, although these two wines were very impressive, they probably need a little bit more coaxing out of their shells.  This was not the case for the 2007 Grivot Échezeaux which practically leapt out of the glass to hug us, with gorgeous velvety structure, pure fruit flavours of fresh plums and raspberries, beautifully integrated tannins and the perfect sweet spot where all the elements of a great wine meet in the glass.  Bingo!  Just in time to enjoy with this season’s game dishes.
